Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop and implement infrared spectroscopy as a new and cost effective technique which will make it possible for the first time to study spin dependant transport properties on electrically isolated magnetic elements and to perform spatially resolved measurements. This powerful probe is based on the magneto-refractive effect (MRE) which was first theoretically proposed in 1995 and recently demonstrated experimentally. The MRE is based on the fact that intraband transitions of the conduction electrons dominate the dielectric properties for frequencies below the onset of interband transitions i.e. in the infrared spectral region. Hence this effect provides an innovative method to measure the change of the spin dependant conductivitys in materials by detecting changes in the dielectric function. The technique is ideally suited to study spindependant transport properties in mesomagnetic elements, in magnetic materials with spatial variation of their properties, or spin electronic devices - all of which have not been accessible with conventional electrical measurement techniques in the past. Following the success of our preliminary experiments, we are confident that after one year of development, the infrared facility will be ready to be made available to the magnetism community.
