Summary on Grant Application Form
A Network will be established on microwaave ceramics. It will be based initially on 5 Universities (representing 8 departments and 4 disciplines) 3 industrial partners (2 of whom are SME's) and 1 government laboratory. All groups are active in the development of materials or devices for communications applications. With a broad based interdisciplinary partnership an integrated approach will be adopted addressing: (I) theory - to understand the factors controlling properties, (ii) structural investigations (both atomic and microstructural ), (iii) ceramic processing -to improve powders and processing roures, (iv) microwave measurement techniques, (v) applications and markets. A management committee will be responsible for monitoring the scientific and technical programmes. The committee will also (I) organise 2 meeting per year and an annual workshop, (ii) help with defining themes for collaborative programmes, (iii) assist with exchange of students/workers, (iv) establish links with national and international organisations. A secretary/administrator will handle day to day running of the Network and be responsible for communication via a newsletter and a web page. The Network will provide increased opportunities for joint projects, interlaboratory measurement comparisons and the initiation of novel research programmes.
