Summary on Grant Application Form
In the first round of the Optoelectronic Systems Integration programme, we were awarded one year's funding to demonstrate the feasibility of linking low cost PCs with a low latency, ultra-fast optical network, in order to allow them to act as a multi-processor computer. This project will start from the prototype achieved in the first phase and investigate four areas where the concept can be enhanced to achieve a usable system. The first is extension to a dynamically reconfigurable network, where nodes can be used standalone, together through the distributed shared memory model of co-operation or together through bit-stream connection, with FPGAs allowing efficient reconfiguration. The second is in further reducing unnecessary complexity and copying in software and hardware layers. The third is in applying new results in cache coherence to memory coherence in the distributed shared memory configuration. The fourth is in developing a systems level integration architecture for an interface sub-system for such networks.
