Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed multiprocessor machine will be used for inter-disciplinary research in the area of materials modelling at the micro and macro size-scale. The research covers a number of areas related to mechanical modelling of engineering materials relevant to industrial applications, including nickel-base superalloys, low alloy steels, metal and polymer composites, high temperature coatings and adhesives. The computational work involved is Finite Element and Finite Volume analyses in 3-D related to modelling of time dependent non-linear material behaviour at the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Increasingly, progress in research in this area is restricted not by a lack of understanding of the physical processes but by software and hardware limitations resulting in excessively long analysis times. Use of shared memory codes on parallel computers will significantly improve computation times-it is expected that the proposed multi-processor will reduce analysis times by at least an order of magnitude. The project also includes collaborative work with the Mathematics Department who acquired an EPSRC parallel computing grant based on a multi-workstation system in 1997. We will receive technical assistance and hardware from them whilst they will compare their hardware/software implementation of the presently proposed multi-processor DIGITAL equipment to their own Workstation Farm .
