Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will investigate the properties of novel TTF-triazines as precursors to redox controlled molecular-recognition guided smart surfaces . The redox active nature of the TTF unit will allow modulation of the binding properties of the triazine moiety by electrochemical oxidation to the electron deficient radical cation and dicationic states, which should possess enhanced binding characteristics compared with that of the aforementioned triazines. We will then study the binding characteristics of both the neutral and oxidised forms of the receptor with various imide containing molecules, using a combination of cyclic voltammetry, NMR and UV spectroscopies. These preliminary studies will provide the foundations for the self assembled mono layer (SAM) studies of deposited thiol functionalised TTF triazines on gold electrodes which will follow. The SAM's formed using our TTF triazines will allow us to electrochemically control the binding of functionalised napthalimides (e.g. hydrophilic and hydrophobic), thereby allowing the exciting possibility of fabricating post-deposition modified surfaces by electrochemical modulation of the binding efficiency of the TTF receptor unit.
