Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the HET and MARI spectrometers at ISIS will be performed to study the spin dynamics of Heisenberg spin ladders and spin chains in M(14) o (41) materials where M=Sr,Ca, La or Y. Studies of single crystal samples will be performed to study the dispersion and cattering function for the ladder and chain excitations. Polycrystalline samples will be used as an efficient means of determining the doping dependence of the ladder spin-triplet excitation. Our work will provide further understanding of the ground state of low dimensional magnetic systems, and the origins of superconductivity in Sr (2) Ca(12) Cu (24) o (41).
