Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme will develop scanning probe microscopy instrumentation and techniques for ultra-high density data storage applications, concentrating on three important areas. Firstly, laser-assisted magnetic force microscopy (MFM) based techniques for implementation of the write and read processes in patterned, nanoscale magnetic media will be investigated. This will involve modification to and developments of the VISTA SPM system requested, and will be carried out in collaboration with our sponsors Burleigh Instruments. This will tie in with EPSRC programme in 'Nanoscale magnetic storage' (GR/L83462). Secondly, the fundamental limits to storage density in conventional magnetic disc media will be assessed by a quantitative MFM study of the written bit structure in advanced disc media developed as part of an existing research collaboration with the disc companies Myrica and Calluna (EPSRC, GR/L13001). Thirdly, we will use AFM and MFM techniques to characterise the write and read processes in erasable optical disc media, in particular the new DVD-RAM phase-change format and the putative super-resolution magneto-optic (MO) format. This will be in collaboration with the second sponsors of this application, Mitel Semiconductors (formerly GEC-Plessey Semiconductors), with whom we are developing advanced read channel signal processing schemes for DVD-RAM and MO optical disc formats (EPSRC GR/L07734).
