Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to build upon our preliminary studies of enatioselective hydrogen-atom transfer reactions to develop radical-chain reactions for the synthesis of optically active organic compounds. The project is based on the application of the principle of polarity-reversal catalysis of hydrogen-atom transfer and the catalysts used will be homochiral thiols, derived mainly from carbohydrates. Hydrosilylation and reductive alkylation of alkenes, along with enantioselective reduction of racemic halides, selenides and thiocarbonyl derivatives, will be investigated. The stoichiometric hydrogen-atom donors in these chain reactions will be simple silanes, tris (trimethylsilyl) silane and organotin hydrides. A variety of types of homochiral thiol will be synthesised and screened for their ability to promote enantioselective hydrogen-atom transfer. The factors that lead to high enantioselectivity will be identified and used to guide the design of still more effective homochiral thiol catalysts.
