Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this proposal we request funds to contribute towards the purchase of state of the art high-intensity, high-resolution, variable temperature powder diffraction facilities. Industrial sponsors have contributed >27% of the total cost of this bid, and ~ 17% has been promised from non-HEFCE departmental and University sources. The remaining costs of the equipment (~56%) are sought from the JREI.The importance of powder diffraction to materials science and other areas of chemistry is beyond dispute. Modern powder diffraction methods can allow the solution and refinement of increasingly complex crystal structures; permit the identification and quantification of known and unknown phases; and allow the rapid monitoring of phenomena such as phase transitions in the solid state. At Durham we have unique facilities for materials research using -single crystal methods and solid state NMR, but suffer from a lack of powder diffraction equipment; indeed the only machine available is an inherited, 20 year old, low resolution instrument. The diffractometer sought will be equipped with a position sensitive detector for high intensity, primary reflection monochromator for high resolution and also have variable temperature capabilities between 10 and 1800 K, with an innovative helium temperature facility. This equipment is essential for the execution and enhancement of our research efforts.
