Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will develop a field emission gun SEM (FEGSEM) specifically tailored for rapidly obtaining electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns from small volumes of materials. The spatial resolution of ~20nm for aluminium will be 2-3 times better than that obtainable using conventional scanning electrons microscope. Existing equipment for diffraction pattern collection and analysis will be interfaced to the microscope. Software developed in Manchester to analyse the data from the instrument will be further developed to enable quantative metallographic and crystallographic analysis of aluminium alloys and other materials with grain or subgrain structures of ~1 micron. The equipment will be used for a variety of existing and new research projects funded by EPSRC and industry including the production of ultrafine grain alloys and thermomechanical processing of aluminium alloys
