Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will investigate electronic properties of low dimensional microstructures for primarily semiconducting materials. Quantum and correlation effects both are essential. Our final goal is to establish a quantitatively reliable effective low energy description. We plan to investigate two examples : quantum dots and quantum wires. The former should be describable in terms of suitably defined t-J-V lattice models. Starting from microscopic models in two dimensions, including also magnetic field, we will establish such quantitative mappings. The current status of exact diagonalisations does not allow us to treat sufficiently large particle numbers and therefore, it will be also a major objective to improve the single particle basis used in our numerical calculations. For quantum wires we will establish a quantitative relationship between, on the one hand ,realistic experimental situation characterised by carrier densities and the geometrics for metallic gates, and, on the other, the theoretically well-studied Luttinger model where Luttinger liquid parameters are needed. We have reason to believe that this relationship will be interesting and very non-trivial.
