Summary on Grant Application Form
In the first part bilayers of polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate containing -COOH and epoxy ended deutero polymers will be annealed above the Tg to promote reaction at the interface. The build up of the deuterodiblock copolymer will be followed using neutron reflectometry and ion beam analysis. The grafting density at the interface will be obtained from these data and compared with the theoretical predictions of Fredrickson and Milner. This will allow us to define whether the chemical potential barrier slows down interfacial reaction and if so at what level of grafting this becomes evident. This knowledge will form a basis for the more technologically relevant transesterification reaction between polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalene 1, 6 dicarboxylate where again planar bilayers will be used to investigate the interfacial aspects of the transesterification particularly the role of Fickian interdiffusion when the extent of reaction is sufficient to promote miscibility. This aspect will quantify by following the movement of a gold marker layer using in house x-ray reflectometry.
