Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is collaboration between the University of Lancaster, the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) (Oxford) and the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) (Ireland). Firstly, we propose to model the interaction of neutrons with p-type MOSFETS to deduce an optimised device structure for neutron detection, specifically relating to the radiative effects of dielectric layers in the device. This aspect is allotted eighteen months of the total programme and will draw on the expertise at NRPB and the NMRC.Then we wish to fabricate the optimised device, at the NMRC, and irradiate it with a neutron flux to assess its performance experimentally. This will be done at VSEL at reduced preferential cost and aims to study the effects of neutron exposure on the MOSFET's electrical properties - in particular the threshold voltage. This is allotted eighteen months. The student will spend up to three months of this time at the NMRC for the fabrication and some device analysis.Project progress will be documented in quarterly reports and the minutes of quarterly meetings of the project team. These reports from the regular platform for project deliverables such as modelling results, device design specification, experimental results etc. Further deliverables include the fabricated device(s).
