Summary on Grant Application Form |
In turbomachines, free-stream turbulence intensity and pressure gradient play dominant roles among many parameters that may affect the boundary layer transition process on turbine blades. An important aspect of the pressure gradient effect is manifested by the considerable difference between the transitional zone length indicated by the distribution of heat transfer coefficient and the momentum boundary layer parameters. An experimental study is proposed to investigate the combined effects of free-stream turbulent intensity and pressure gradient on both the momentum and heat transfer process during transition. Experiments will be conducted firstly to investigate artificially created turbulent spots developing under favourable pressure gradients. The transition process under the influence of both free-stream turbulence intensity and favourable pressure gradients will then be studied. Hot-wire anemometer will be used as the key experimental method to measure both the velocity and temperature fields caused by the transitional events. This study is expected to shed new light on the different effects, which pressure gradients exert on the momentum and heat transfer process during transition, and to provide new information required for improved transition models.
