This project investigates the intelligent control strategies required for modern complex communications systems. The work will focus towards ATM as QMW has access to an ATM test-bed on which some strategies can be implemented. However, the work will be generic and so can be applied equally to other networks, such as those using IP.In real Networks, control functions do not act independently but as part of an overall strategy, which aims to provide the customer with the required Quality of Service, and yet at the same time allow the network operator run the network in an efficient and economical manner. This project aims to analyse, build and _alidate an agent based distribution control to archive this.The System will consist of distributed components which range from purely reactive agents which utilise planning and other reasoning techniques to compute desirable control tactics over the next control cycle. Lower level agents, (generally) have faster control cycle than higher level agents, but at all levels, reasoning is resource bounded. Mechanisms for managing the interaction between these components, particularly in the context of conflicting requirements is the heart of the architecture.
