This proposed project will be a timely addition to the development of porous polymer networks as functional organic materials. It is concerned with the synthesis and study of networks composed of phthalocyanine (Pc) macrocycles linked by a rigid, spirocycle, molecular scaffold. These materials are anticipated to act as stable organic zeolites with in-built catalytic centres. The networks are designed to ensure that neighbouring Pc rings are orthogonal and due to their size, cannot adopt an efficient space-filling configuration - resulting in the formation of pores with nanometre dimensions. The networks will be assembled either by the formation of the Pc component via cyclottetramerisation of a spiro-linked bis(phthalonitrile) or by a spiro-polymerisation reaction between a suitably substituted Pc derivative and pentaethythritol. Exciting functionality will originate from the well-documented properties of the Pc macrocycle which accommodates most metal-ions within its central cavity and interacts strongly with certain classes of organic compounds. These properties will allow the porous structure of the 3-D networks to be fully investigated and suggests immediate applications as absorbants. In addition, the use of these materials as heterogeneous catalysts will be studied.
