Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme of research being proposed combines the application of a new and exciting non-destructive diagnostic technique - second harmonic Kerr effect - for the investigation of surface and interfacial magnetism; with a major industrially funded study of spin-valve devices. The aims of the research will be to establish a UK centre of excellence for the use of linear and nonlinear magneto-optic techniques for the investigation of the physical properties of magnetic and magneto-optic recording media and components. We intend to develop the theoretical background needed to write the computer software that will allow us to predict nonlinear magneto-optical effects in single and multilayer systems. In parallel, we will be establishing a second harmonic MO experimental facility that combines uniquely with existing ex situ and in situ linear MO instruments. These will be used initially, to study simple systems, followed by more complex devices such as spin-valve structures and multilayer MO media. The spin-valve media will be fabricated under a major industrially funded project using facilities provided by the Northern Ireland Centre for Advanced materials and Seagate Technology. It is also intended to investigate the possibilities of imaging magnetic interface structures using SHG radiation.
