Summary on Grant Application Form |
The [TcO4] anion is difficult to remove from radioactive waste solutions and contaminated groundwaters. Hydrated Fe oxides and microcrystalline FeS have highly reactive surfaces, with redox reactions being possible on the latter. We propose: 1) to determine the effectiveness of these substrates for the removal of Tc from solution; 2) to use X-ray absorption spectroscopy to define the chemical environment (oxidation state, interatomic distances, co-ordination numbers) of Tc reacted with the Fe phases; and 3) to evaluate the extent to which Re is suitable analogue for Tc.
