Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to exploit new results to develop a family of practical pulse sources able to generate the ultrashort high quality pulses suitable for OTDM communications systems bit rates of >160Gb/s. The sources will be intended to generate pulses as short as 100fs on demand with excellent pulse quality. Ultrahigh speed systems demonstrators at BT Labs will be used to test the laser within transmission, switching and regeneration sub-systems and for all-optical packet switching within a 100Gb/S LAN environment. The laser source will also be used for WDM-OTDM systems where spectral filtering of the broad linewidth source allows wavelength selection as well as sculpturing the pulse width to suit a particular system configuration. The suitability of using the pulse source as a comb frequency generator, in order to provide fixed channel spacing for dense WDM, will be assessed. Finally wavelengths outside the EDFA band will be accessed using broad area SOAs.
