Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the preparation and application of enantiomerically pure lanthanide (II) complexes in enantioselective organic synthesis. There are two stages to the work. The first goal is to develop ligands which promote high enantioselectivity in the reactions of these reagents whilst the second target is to develop protocols which permit the use of catalytic quantities of the lanthanide reagent. The first objective builds on our preliminary results which show that ligand controlled asymmetric induction is feasible. Advances will be sought through the design and synthesis of multidentate (n>4) electron donating ligands using as key binding groups amides, amines, phosphonates and phosphonamides. In order to explore maximum ligand diversity we will adopt a 'combinatorial' approach to this area and seek to develop small libraries of ligands on solid supports. The successful candidates will be screened in various C-C bond forming processes notably the samarium Barbier and pinacol coupling reactions. We will approach the goal of catalytic use of lanthanide II reagents through the use of efficient recycling techniques. In this we will explore the possibility for the in situ reduction of LR (III) to LR (II) using both photochemical and electrochemical techniques.
