Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary aim of this programme will be to complete the design, construction and installation of the EXOGAM and VAMOS spectrometers in order to use this unique combination to probe the structure of highly exotic nuclei lying at the extremes of the nuclear chart. On the proton-rich side of stability, the experimental programme will focus on and near the N=Z line to study the role of isospin in collective nuclear structure. On the neutron-rich side, the aim will be to search for experimental signatures of a developing neutron skin. This will involve a steadily increasing use of the new radioactive beam facilities throughout the period of this proposal. Various types of reaction will be used, including fusion evaporation , Coulomb excitation and possibly (inverse) single particle transfer. A parallel programme of theoretical studies will be undertaken to develop various isospin invariant approaches to the description of collective structure in the N=Z=28-50 shell and to explore the use of algebraic methods to predict phenomena at both nuclear extremes.
