A replacement data system for the old sector instrument should ensure that the areas of research within the Department, which produce samples that incompatible with the existing open access electrospray/APCI set-up, do not suffer because of the nature of their samples; the new GC-MS system will provide a much needed modern, fast scanning machine that will cope with the fast chromatography afforded by modern capillary columns and complement the existing instrumentation by providing an open access system for many of the samples that are not ionised by the open access electrospray system. The need for accurate mass measurement is one of the fundamental requirements for publication of novel compounds. The existing system fails to produce these measurements on a routine basis, because of the slowness and unreliability of the data system and the requirement to produce low resolution spectra for non-ES/APCI compatible compounds. Much of the latter could be analysed on a bench-top GC-MS system, using the GC column as the sample introduction technique, giving the chemist hands-on access to fast throughput analysis with the benefit of the GC trace as confirmation of purity. This in turn would free machine time on the existing 70-SE for high resolution work.
