Summary on Grant Application Form |
Manufacturing industry is an ever-more complex and demanding global market. Evidence suggests that companies are often coping by diverting complexity down the value chain, causing particular problems to their suppliers.Industry needs to learn how to exploit complexity rather than minimise or avoid it. This project aims to attempt to understand the impact of complexity on the economics of manufacturing and its associated information processes within the value chain. The findings will be used to provide tools to identify, measure and manipulate that complexity. The research will build on the theoretical work already developed by both oxford and Cambridge Universities. The approach is to work with three major companies and suppliers designated by these three. The information and material flows can be grouped into two broad categories; flows within each of the organisations and flows between organisations. All of these flows will be observed and measured. The intention is to draw generalisable results from the findings capable of being turned into a decision tool that can be used by industry.
