Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research concerns the development of modelling and data fusion algorithms for minimally invasive image-guided interventions. The motivating clinical application is the treatment of brain aneurysms using a new catheter-based techniques called endovascular coil embolisation (ECE) which has been developed as an alternative to surgery.ECE currently uses 2D (X-ray) imaging to guide placement of coils during treatment. The real need is for 3D information. The research goals are: to investigate new strategies for pre-treatment planning based on a combination of 2D and 3D image analysis to enable a radiologist to better judge if a patient can be operated on and how to select, automatically, best-views and a coiling strategy to be used during a treatment; and, to develop new techniques to update a treatment plan based on image measurements acquired during a treatment. New algorithms will need to be developed in the areas of best-view selection, rapid 2D - 3D registration, vascular image fusion (CTA, MRA, x-ray), and blood flow change quantification from DSA. A two-site study (at the Radcliffe Infirmary and Queen Square) will evaluate the clinical potential of this work. The technology could also be used to deploy devices in other parts of the body, such as the heart.
