Sewer deterioration is a serious problem for UK water and waste water companies. The public sewer system is estimated to be one of the largest infrastructures of cities and towns overall. Since many of the existing waste pipes are over 80 years old, a large number of pipes are suffering from significant damage. Governmental regulators are concerned about the damage to the environment and financial losses. Consequently, the detailed inspection of public sewers is a high priority task for the water companies.One of the major problems in sewer inspection is the difficulty to obtain measurements from the entire pipe wall, mainly because sewers are filled with two media. Existing methods employing single sensors fail to solve this problem, because they can acquire data either in gas or liquid only.The project's aim is to develop a reliable system for the non-destructive inspection of sewers. The novel feature of the proposed system is its capability to detect defects not only in gas but also in the sewer liquid. In order to achieve this aim, the system will make use of a multi-sensor device and appropriate processing techniques, such as neural networks, to reliably fuse and classify the acquired multi-sensor data.
