Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks to integrate the electronics assocciated with controlling the individual tip heights of a multiple tip scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The STM is a serial instrument. This limits the rate at which images can be acquired and restricts scan areas. It is also difficult to envisage the use of the instrument in realistic device fabrication schemes. A parellel, multiple-tip STM would, in principle, be able to overcome these limitations. The present applicant is part of a team of researchers from three UK institutions working on the problem of constructing such a multiple-tip STM.
