Summary on Grant Application Form |
The complementary skills of teams from three universities (Nottingham, UMIST, Sheffield) will address the detection and control of pipework arrangements designed to act as the preliminary (partial) separator stage which is necessary if advanced, more compact phase separators are to be introduced.Capacitance tomography will be used to characterise the flow in the pipes at the entrance to and within the preliminary separator. Control will be achieved through a mechanistic model/neural network combination with the neural network being trained on data for the individual components of the separator.A preliminary separator based on pipework and/or fluidic components will be designed and installed on a flow rig at Nottingham and tested under steady-state and transient conditions. The capacitance tomography equipment will be employed to monitor the incoming and intermediate multiphase flow and its signals used to inform the control process. The measurement system will be tested under full industrial conditions at an onshore oil field.
