Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of microwave heating is well known in a number of fields. Its use in composites is somewhat limited. While a considerable literature exists for simple epoxy systems there is little known about the effects of microwave heating upon the structure and properties of commercial epoxy systems or of other thermosetting resin systems. In this project an instrument which will act as a microwave heated modulated differential scanning calorimeter will be constructed. Incorporated into the design will be near infra red optics to follow the cure chemistry simultaneously during heating. The device one built will be used, together with the conventional techniques currently being used by the applicant to investigate the cure processes in a range of thermosetting resins during microwave heating. It will also be used to investigate the reasons for microwave cured epoxy resins displaying different glass transition behaviour to conventionally cured materials.
