This fast stream application is to assist in the establishment of a new research group specialising in the non-invasive methods of assessing tissue viability using NIR spectrometry and fluorimetry.Although this is a new area of research within the present department, UMIST and within the North West region, the applicant has an established track record in the development of this emerging field of research, showing that NIR spectroscopy and NADH fluorimetry are clinically useful techniques. However the present instrumentation cannot readily provide quantitative measurements and furthermore the applications of these techniques are currently limited to a few specific areas of clinical research. Therefore it is proposed to develop a multi-wavelength spectrometer system for use in the 500nm to 1100 nm spectral region and incorporating a reference channel based on water absorption and apply in areas of current biochemical and medical interest. Specifically this will include the spectroscopic measurements of NO and CO, both of which have been implicated in many pathophysiological conditions, such as wound healing, sepsis, tissue rejection and vascular dysfunction.
