Summary on Grant Application Form |
The use of chiral nematic liquid crystals in electrically switchable devices is becoming increasingly important. The devices are coloured, high brightness and blistable and are known as surface stabilised cholesteric texture (SSCT) devices. Such devices are of particular interest in applications that are low update and require good viewing angles and high brightness, devices that include large are displays and mobile telephones. This proposal aims to study the optical and electro-optical properties of materials suitable for inclusion in such devices, thereby providing information on the optimisation of devices for specific applications. The programme is for two years and is supported by Merck Ltd who will provide the materials and devices for study. In addition to providing valuable know how for the materials employed in SSCT devices and the alignment layers used in the device, we hope to examine the highly chiral dopants employed to produce suitable materials.
