Summary on Grant Application Form
For the CRESS cell to operate successfully the two redox couples used must be reversible. The first task in the research programme is thus to investigate the reversibility of the redox couples Cr (III)/Cr (VI) and Cr (II)/Cr (III). The aim of this task will be to identify electrolyte and electrode conditions which will give efficient reversible operation of both redox couples. The second task is to develop a flow cell which will eliminate the need for a membrane. This will be achieved by flowing the electrolyte through porous electrodes so that the reaction products cannot back react at the counter electrode. Finally a prototype CRESS cell will be evaluated in terms of voltage and current efficiency for comparison with existing energy storage systems.
