Most chemical processes of industrial and technological relevance occur in the liquid phase. However, a significant percentage of such processes are actually heterogeneous, i.e. they involve the boundaries between immiscible liquids (such as an oil phase and an aqueous phase) in some way. Traditionally it has been extremely difficult to determine the actual mechanisms of such processes because of difficulties in measuring a) the actual flux of molecules across the interface and b) unravelling the various factors which contribute to the flux - diffusion of molecules, convective flow in solution, movement due to electric fields, the chemical reaction itself - from one another. This proposal seeks to rectify this situation by addressing problem a) through the use of direct electrochemical measurements, and by developing a flow system with known transport characteristics along with a numerical model based on finite-element techniques to address problem b). In so doing, we will be able to determine the mechanisms and rates of chemical reactions occurring at liquid/liquid interfaces, and also be able to investigate the role the interface plays in promoting the reaction.
