Summary on Grant Application Form
Studies of the kinetics of supercritical water (SCW) have attracted substantial funding from the US to support multi-million dollar projects at MIT, Sandia, Idaho National Laboratories, etc, the oxidation of toxic organic wastes. Therefore studies of the kinetics of SCW can have considerable academic, commercial, and environmental significance. The project is interdisciplinary. The SCW oxidation technique has potential for the treatment of wastes, but it could also be developed into an efficient and environmentally friendly way to treat domestic wastes if the operation cost can be reduced and some forecasts would suggest that in the 21st century waste disposal by combustion will be replaced by SCW oxidation reactors. The research intended in this programme will advance fundamental awareness of the kinetics and mechanics of oxidation by SCW and the project will provide opportunities to train postgraduates for a potentially exciting industry.
