Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main theme of the project is a theoretical study of the hydrodynamics of quantum fluids with particular emphasis on the question of vortex nucleation. This will involve solving the non-linear equations describing the flow conditions encountered in experiments on dilute atomic condensates, super-fluid liquid helium and superconductors. We will investigate the link between vortex formation and the appearance of drag, and propose efficient experimental techniques to produce vortex lines and rings in alkali vapour condensates and investigate their subsequent dynamics.
