Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary aim of this programme will be to design, build and commission the GREAT spectrometer in order to use the resulting unique facility on the stable beam accelerator facilities at Jyvaskyla, GSI and elsewhere. One focus of the research will be to study the structure of the odd-odd nuclei on and near the N=Z line with a view to throwing more light on the recently proposed phenomenon of neutron-proton pairing. The other area of interest will be the study of the most neutron-deficient nuclei attainable with proton numbers just below the shell gap at Z=82. The goal in this case will be to understand the effect of the changing neutron and proton shell structure on the collective features and, in particular, the phenomenon of shape coexistence. In both cases, the highly neutron-deficient nature of the nuclei of interest implies that the completion of such studies is beyond the scope of current experimental facilities and requires the unique combination of GREAT and VEGA spectrometers offered by this proposal.
