Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme builds upon the ORC's pioneering multidisciplinary work in optical fibre and waveguide materials and device research. (i) by investigating novel glass materials as hosts for laser and amplifier dopants, for longer wavelength operation, for greater photosensitivity and for higher second-order nonlinearity and to realise optical fibres from these materials to enable applications-driven research in fields ranging from telecommunications to medicine. (ii) by exploiting silicate glass based integrated optical technology to realise all-uv-written waveguide devices incorporating devices for dense wavelength-division-multiplexed systems and by studying doped waveguide systems in garnets and chalcogenides, using pulsed laser deposition and etching, for laser applications. (iii) by realising waveguides in periodically-poled lithium niobate and other nonlinear materials for low-threshold optical parametric processes. (iv) by developing glass waveguide technology for biomolecular sensor arrays for application in medicine, the environment and drug discovery. This fabrication-intensive research, which will represent approximately one fifth of ORC activities, will provide the foundation for a range of collaborative research avenues which exploit the product of the once cleanrooms and associated facilities.
