Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a programme of x-ray scattering and associated magnetic measurements on thin metallic multilayers. Four grazing incidence diffraction and scattering techniques will be used , together with depth-sensitive fluorescence measurements for non-destructive chemical analysis. Studies of Au/Fe multilayers will address the role of Nb and its incorporation in growth on sapphire. We will seek the structural origins of magnetic property dispersion and change on annealing of permalloy/Cu multilayers and spin valves. Previous work on the relation of switching and exchange fields to interface roughness in spin valves. Previous work on the relation of switching and exchange fields to interface roughness in spin valves will be developed and extended. Comparison of the structures of both layers and interface of Co/Ru with Co/Cu will be used to address intriguing differences observed in magnetic properties. In perpendicular magnetic materials such as Co/Pd, we will test theoretical predictions of the variation of surface anisotropy with roughness amplitude and correlation length and examine the general validity of our association of anisotropy saturation in Co/Pt with interface roughness conformality. Grazing incidence surface diffraction will be used to determine structure of ultra-thin epitaxial films and grazing incidence fluorescence developed as a quality control tool for spin valve and hard disc material production.
