Summary on Grant Application Form |
Liver transplantation is the only available treatment for end stage liver failure. However, considerable distances are involved in retrieving donor livers for transplantation. In addition, livers may be found to be unsuitable at the donor site or when matched to a recipient. We propose a method of remote evaluation and assistance during harvesting, using multimedia transmission over a wide are broadband ATM connection. The system will demonstrate the application to liver transplant surgery, but the methods mat be applied to other organs (e.g. heart) or applications which require accurate colour appearances, interactive planning using 3D and multimodal data and efficient multimedia use of network resources. We will calibrate the system colour characteristics for accurate reproduction of organ appearance on the multimedia screen. The effect of colour variations on the evaluation process will be studied. The expert surgeon at the transplant site will be able to remotely guide the donor site team for the best possible outcome of harvesting. Network quality of service requirements for Constant Bit Rate, Variable Bit Rate and Available Bit Rate services will be measured and assessed for efficiency. Dynamic scaling of video and data will be investigated to match system demands to the available network resources.
