Summary on Grant Application Form |
This systematic and detailed investigation will provide a strong foundation for innovative research to identify factors that influence the biological integration of titanium-based materials used for surgical implantation.Ion-implantation can be used to modify the chemistry and structure of titanium surfaces without altering the bulk mechanical properties. The main focus of this proposal is the interplay between the implanted ions and the nature of the surface oxide. This will be intimately probed by the use of different substrates including naturally oxidised titanium, thermally oxidised titanium and Ti02 single crystals. A major objective is to rationalise the effects of dopant type, substrate type, concentration gradient and post-implantation processing on the fundamental surface chemistry of these materials. The study will progress to examine the effects of near-surface composition and structure on the precipitation of apatite-like phosphates from simulated body fluids and to initiate preliminary experiments into cell activity. Experimental techniques will include XPS, Raman spectroscopy, SIMS and SEM for materials characterisation, together with a number of methods of biological evaluation. Funding is sought primarily for access to ion-implantation, SIMS and XPS facilities.
