Summary on Grant Application Form |
Transition-metal hydrides exhibit a uniquely wide range of bonding types and interactions. Largely on account of this diversity they play a pivotal role in organometallic synthesis and catalysis. This programme aims to synthesise small organometallic molecules and adducts exemplifying several of these bonding types, and to submit them to investigation by a range of structural and spectroscopic techniques. This approach will provide a clearer understanding of equilibrium structures and potential energy surfaces, and how these relate to the chemical properties and dynamics of transition-metal hydrides in fundamental processes such as C-H and H-H activation and insertion/elimination reactions. It will also shed light on the ubiquitous occurrence of hydrogen bonding in inorganic chemistry, and on the role it lays in important chemical and catalytic transformations.
