Summary on Grant Application Form |
Equipment for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes via the carbon arc method under carefully controlled experimental conditions will be constructed. Equipment for the preparation of carbon rods containing controlled amounts of highly dispersed dopants of metallic elements - and possible other elements will be assembled. The metal doped carbon rods will be used in the carbon arc experiments and the resulting nanotubes will be analysed in the first place using HTREM techniques. Systematic modification of experimental variables such as power input/temperature, partial pressure of chamber gases, nature and quantity of the metal dopants, will be made to explore the effects on the nature of the product nanotubes. When conditions which reducibly give rise to high specificity for the synthesis of, for example, single wall nanotubes, then the effect of experimental variations on factors such as average internal tube diameter will be investigated. When gram scale samples of high quality nanotubes can be prepared these will be used to explore the wide-ranging possible applications which have been envisaged. Collaborations with many others are certainly to be expected at this stage of the research.
