Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is concern worldwide about the health and environmental effects of vehcle exhaust emissions. The more stringent emission restrictions can only be met by electric and hybrid electric vehicle technology. By utlising an efficient, compact engine/generator set (APU) in conjunction with an electric traction drive low emission levels can be achieved. In this project a permanent magnet, axial flux toroidal generator will be used with the design developed to produce higher power output than previously achieved. The generator will replace the normal engine flywheel and will also be u; for engine starting. The control of the APU will be developed for both constant speed, constant power, operation and, for larger powers, for variable speed, variable power, operation. This will allow the engine to follow an optimum operating trajectory with regards fuel use and emissions.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keywords describing areas of proposal.Electrical Engineering, Energy, Transport
