The requested CCD area detector diffractometer will replace the existing and out of date diffractometer and will be housed in a purpose-built X-ray laboratory within the University of Bath's new 8m Chemistry Department. It will be used to determine the crystal structures of a large variety of inorganic, organic and organometallic compounds which will be supplied by the research groups of the eleven applicants, including in collaboration with the two external sponsors. Occasional use of the facility will be made by other research groups based at the University of Bath.The equipment will greatly enhance the research effort within the Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacy and Pharmacology by allowing a significantly increased throughput of samples, improved data quality and the ability to collect data, in house, on samples that are inaccessible to the current system. The project will include a significant component of 'hands-on' training given to research students thereby increasing the quality and breadth of their overall research training. Results emanating from the project will be of direct benefit to users of research already collaborating with the applicants and will be of indirect benefit to others through the publication of results within basic and strategic areas of research such as structure and bonding, co-ordination chemistry, catalysis, inorganic materials, asymmetric synthesis, clean technology, and medicinal chemistry.
