Summary on Grant Application Form |
Phase 1 ResearchTo review existing literature and driver behaviour and 'black box' technology. This will include data previously identified for high and low risk drivers and behavioural measures such as speed, acceleration, braking, steering and gear selection which are related to accident risk. This will help construct a 'drivers index'. This phase will also review feedback mechanisms suitable at the organisational level.Phase 2 DevelopmentIndustrial partner Lucas will develop a prototype 'black box' to monitor drivers against the 'driver index'. Feedback systems will also be developed and training schemes devised.Phase 3 Field Trials and AssessmentTrials will be conducted in the AA fleet to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in terms of changed behaviour, accident rates, maintenance costs and fuel consumption. Comparisons will be made between control and test groups both before and after installation. This will test the reliability of the 'black box' and the feedback systems. There will be several methods of feedback and training schemes tested.
