Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed project is to develop a computational fluid dynamics program for steam flow, incorporating non-equilibrium phase change effects. The code will be based upon state-of-the-art adaptive mesh techniques which enable the calculations to focus upon the resolve regions of rapid change induced by condensation. A new method will be used to model droplet size distributions and this will greatly facilitate extension of the computations to deal with complex and realistic turbine flows. The computer code will be fully validated against existing experimental data and subsequently used to investigate thermodynamic wetness losses, and the interaction between condensation processes and turbine aerodynamics. These are areas of real engineering interest for which increased understanding will enable benefits in terms of enhanced turbine efficiency. The work will be carried out by a PhD student for whom it will provide a valuable training and intellectual experience. Dr A J White will supervise the student, contributing an estimated input of 3 hours per week.
