This proposal describes a unique program of research; unifying the expertise and skills of four collaborating groups in polymer, surface and synthetic organic chemistry; to examine, exploit and enhance all aspects of the role of the polymer support in solid phase organic synthesis. The research conducted will allow:i. The use of any existing and/or novel polymers, in tailor-made morphologiesii. The solventless introduction of a single or several different types of functional groups (multifunctionalisation) to the surface of these supports with full control of the level of surface coverage iii. The development of novel solid-phase chemistriesiv. Exploitation of the complementarity of the different groups introduced by multifunctionalisation to develop methods of chemical control that are intimately dependent on surface properties and unique to TOPSS.The research has three basic steps: the synthesis of well defined (size, shape, porosity etc.) polymeric supports in a number of different morphologies (beads, films, membranes and monoliths); plasmachemical functionalisation of each novel support together with complete characterisation of the surface properties of the resultant polymer; and application of these supports with a particular emphasis on chemistries not previously possible in a solid phase format.
