This project proposal is concerned with the development of sensor technology and techniques to assess driver impairment. It will construct quantifiable models of normative and impaired driver behaviour, based on multidimensional measurement. The programme will integrate and model three categories of data capture: a) vehicle control (e.g., primary task measures of driving performance), b) psychophysiology (e.g., measurement of - the central nervous system) and c) behavioural (e.g., indirect measures of central nervous system activity and (driving performance). The utility of each model will be assessed with reference to a) Sensitivity, i.e., can the measure predict high levels of impairment?, b) Reliability, i.e., measure and impairment stability for both inter and intea-individual differences. Further, is the relationship between the measure and impairment robust across', driving conditions/environments for an individual driver and c) Diagnosticity, to what extent is the candidate measure capable of distinguishing one category of functional impairment from another.The utility of modelling several indictors simultaneously may provide a more robust approach to detect impairment and is anticipated to yield less detection errors when applied to the entire driving population. It ,additionally offers the opportunity to utilise, for example, two lost cost sensors rather than a single high cost ,system.
