Summary on Grant Application Form |
This Proposal offers a novel solution to the problem of radiation sources in the terahertz gap; such sources commercially-significant applications in imaging (including medical imaging, especially of teeth, skin and near-surface joints) communications, surveillance and sensing. Vacuum tube technology (eg as used in the klystron) is Ire-invented' using two new technologies: micromachining and field emitter (FE) electron sources These are `natural' methods to extend the frequency range of vacuum tubes into the terahertz (THz) region, and make devices compact and operate at low voltages (100v). The result is a completely new class of device, wit] individual output powers in the millwatt range, which might also be integrated with a mixer in a detector, orcombined with several other devices as a powerful terahertz source in an array system. The chosen demonstration is a klystron this will be constructed using a high current FE array source and an on-chip electrostatic lens Initially, a re-entrant cavity structure will be built by conventional machining technology, and both units w: be assembled as a reflex klystron operating at 500GHz. The cavity and reflector will then be fabricated bymachining techniques and combined with field emitter array in a vacuum encapsulated device.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Keywords describing areas of proposal. - - terahertz sources, field emitters, micromachining, klyst
