Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks funding to establish a new materials characterisation suite based in the Physics Department in Queen's University Belfast. Recent investment in materials science research in Northern Ireland has been enormous: in the last five years 2 professors, 1 reader and 5 lecturers have been appointed in the Queens Physics department alone; over 7M of materials-research funding has been generated by the Northern Ireland Universities in this period, with significant proportions of this coming from industry. By far the dominant area of investment has been in advanced functional thin film media and devices. However, the current characterisation facilities available are not commensurate with the quality and quantity of current materials-related research. High resolution structural, crystallographic and chemical analysis has become an urgent necessity. It is the purpose of this proposal to establish state of the art TEM and XRD capabilities that will underpin a large range of current and future academic and industrially driven research.
