Summary on Grant Application Form
The DTI considers building integrated photovoltaics to be a technology with significant long term potential (after 2010) for contribution to the UK energy supply. This would require a large number of small grid connected PV systems to be embedded in the electrical network. This project will investigate the implications of this by modelling the input of these PV systems to generation and transmission systems in both technical and economic terms. This involves the development of suitable means of expressing the PV output from multiple small systems with variable solar input, the incorporation of these power flows into the electrical system model and thew development of appropriate assessment methods for the results of the simulation. The research is complimentary to other studies funded by the DTI investigating the interaction of PV with distribution networks. The collaborative project will draw on the power system expertise o UMIST and the experience of the University of Northumbria in all aspects of photovoltaics.
